Homework for November 25-29, 2005

A thousand apologies to everyone in my class. In my rush to get to the Middle School Fun Night meeting I posted the wrong set of homework by reposting the second set of homework questions. So, I have removed them and I am not going to post the original questions in case some of the students checked the website, realized the mistake, and correctly didn't bother to do the work. If they did that they most likely won't check the site again, so I don't want to confuse them.

Once more I apologize and I will make sure that doesn't happen again.

Have a good weekend.

For November 25, 2005

Welcome back. For this post I am going to ask you to do something a little different. Rather than read the text I would like you to go under the Help menu in Word and search for Setting Tab Stops. Then, answer the following questions:

  1. What is a tab stop?
  2. What does it enable you to do?
  3. What are two ways to set tabs (hint: one can be found under Format)?
  4. How can you precisely set tabs?
  5. Explain what a leader is and how you set one.

Remember, write the answers in your words. Good luck. Once you have finished that get the worksheet from me in class so you may begin working with Tabs.

The Second Post

Welcome back to my blog. How are things going? Did you finish your first blog assignment? I hope so because I will be checking them soon.

For your second blog assignment read pages 40-41 and answer the following:

1. In your own words write a paragraph explaining how a spell checker works, including it's limitations and it's advantages.

2. What is one limitation of some word processors when it comes to layouts.

3. In your own words explain what mail merge is and give an example of how it is used.

Good luck, and I look forward to reading it.

Welcome to the blog

First Contact:

Welcome to my first classroom blog. I am excited because soon you guys are going to be starting your own blogs so we can communicate about what you have done outside of class to prepare for you IGCSE exam.

You might be wondering why a blog? Well, why not? Actually, the reason we are going to continue with a blog is because we as a class have precious little class time in order to sufficiently cover the required material to give you the tools you need to be successful at this level of your IT education. So, the blog gives us a technoligically sound method of allowing us to comminicate outside of class, thus leaving the class time to do more hands on learning of the programs we are going to cover.

To start this process do the following:

  1. Go to www.blogger.com and set up your own account from which you are going to post your homework. Remember your sign in name, password, URL, and title. Give the URL and title of the blog to Mr. Wehrle.
  2. Write an introductory opening paragraph to welcome your readers to your blog. Remember who your reader is going to be: Me! At least mainly me. Of course you are encouraged to check each others blogs to get tips and give suggestions on what a good blog looks like, especially in terms of content.
  3. I will give you a chance to do your first homework in class so we can deal with any problems you have with this new activity. So, read pages 38-39 in the text and answer the following questions:

List all the things a word processor can do (we will then practice some of these things in class).

What are two rules for making documents look good?

There are two important things I am looking for: to make the answers easy to read and to put the answers in your own words. Good luck. Remember, I will be regularly checking your blog, giving you feedback, and marking whether your homework is done or not.
