Homework for January 13, 2006

Are you back into the routine of school? I certainly hope so. To continue our look at Spreadsheets please read pages 100-101 and answer the two questions found on page 101. For #1 the file on the website can be found at www.oup.com/uk/ictforgcse . Then, go to Part B and at the bottom you will see "Choosing the right file for calculations". Open this up. It will ask you to compare Excel with two other programs, but you only need to do one. So, save the file and then delete the column for the second program. If you don't have another caluclations program on your computer at home search the Internet for an explanation of a program (i.e. Lotus) and see if they have the functions listed. Page 100-101 simply list these functions and explains what each one does. Hint: it may help to try to find online guides for these programs.

January 6 classwork

Welcome back from holidays. I hope it was restful, Santa was good to you AND you received you a lot of "otoshidama". I wish we had that when I was growing up!

Anyway, lets get down to business. For your first reading assignment in 2006 (Wow, time flies when you are having fun) I would like you to read pages 96-97 and answer the following questions:

  1. What is a spreadsheet?
  2. Give two reasons why spreadsheets are good to use.
  3. Give five different functions a spreadsheet can perform.
  4. Write a short paragraph describing how a spreadsheet works.
  5. What is a formula?
  6. What is the advantage of using formulas in a spreadsheet?

You should have some time in class to do this work. Good luck and lets have a great new year!
